Mindfulness and meditation can be thought of as two separate practices, this course focuses primarily on mindfulness as a practise in our daily lives.
Throughout our lives we take on so much based upon what we are told, and we pick up rules and beliefs without ever having the opportunity to question them. Some experts estimate that 70% of our subconscious programming, which occurs during our first seven years, is negative. We look at the world through a single lens based on our personal history.
By being mindful we can change the lens and view the world through the filter of curiosity. We can experience our emotions without being overtaken by them. We can let go of the need to be perfect. To understand everything. To stop judging ourselves and what is.
When we live mindfully, we:
- Pay attention to the present moment
- Make conscious choices
- Experience less stress
- Make less judgements
- Have a better memory
- Feel our emotions at the time
- Live purposefully
- Don’t react
- Feel happier
The mindful way is letting go of judgement that something is good or bad, right or wrong, and accepting what is right now.
People often refer to times when they can’t move forward as ‘being blocked’. This really means that they don’t know how to move forward and achieve the outcome they desire.
When we think of ourselves as ‘being blocked’ we are closed, often defensive and sometimes in a state of denial. We try to use our will to make something happen or to change someone.
The mindful way is open, curious, aware and accepting of what is. This is key. Carl Jung said, “What you resist not only persists, but will grow in size”. The mindful way is based on acceptance of what is, compassion, empathy and wisdom.
